trying something untill you get it right
you're checking your math problem and just keep changing the variable until it works

The story of my life.
My math teacher won't let me do "trial and error" or "guess and check" solutions. They all have to be algebraic solutions- the reason why I used to get 100s in math and now I get 80s.

One way to solve a problem.

A person will try something, get it wrong, learn from the mistakes, try again, and hopefully eventually get it right.

Many great ideas and inventions were devised through the process of trial and error.
Through trial and error, I finally figured out how to fix that sticky door handle.

To do something by trial and error means to brute force it. Just mindlessly trying different combinations of something until you get the right result.
-Hey man! I am such an awesome hacker, I cracked the password on your box!
-Nah, you just brute forced it
